Veteran’s Legacy Ball

Enid held its first Veteran’s Legacy Ball this year.  Coordinated by Elaine Johns, the elegant event was held at the Expo Center Saturday, November 6th.  An outstanding veteran from each branch of military service was chosen to win a “Veteran of the Year” award at the ball where they were treated to a very moving performance by Lana’s School of Dance’s advanced class.  The performance, “Good Night, Saigon” was actually inspired by one of Lana’s friends, David McCoy, several years ago and was originally performed for a Veteran’s Day event at the David Allen Memorial Ballpark.  This year, McCoy was named one of the Legacy Veterans for the Navy and his granddaughter had the opportunity to perform the dance at the ball when he received his award.  She wore his dog tags during the performance. McCoy was a medic in Vietnam.

Other recipients were  Jack McNiece, Army;  Jim Goodrich, Marine Corps; M.L. Becker, Air Force; and William A. “Bill” Estes, Coast Guard.  The recipients and their families and friends enjoyed an evening of big band music and commaraderie and Louis McCune, editor-in-chief of Oklahoma Today Magazine emceed.

Plans for the new veteran’s museum to be built at Woodring Airport were also unveiled.
